This tree grows in Sri lanka now mostly in villages.
It is a large tree and the fruit is used in curries. When it is ripe the inside is red and and when it is dried in the sun it turns black. The black sun dried stuff is used in fish curries mostly. It is extremely sour. Yes, it is supposed to make people lose weight according to herbal physicians. But take care that you do not get gastritis by over consumption. It is also a preservative and used together with salt to preserve some food items. It is called GORAKA in sinhala.
Some pictures here are of the Mangosteen. An extremely tasty fruit. The outer skin is supposed to be highly medicinal.
